NJC Launches Investigation into Senior Judges' Misconduct

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has commenced a discreet investigation into several senior judges in Nigeria, including the head of the court, due to serious allegations of misconduct. Sources within the council revealed that the inquiry is extraordinary and has triggered numerous petitions against unnamed senior judicial officers.

The NJC, which is responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judicial officers, is handling the investigation with strict confidentiality. Tobi Soniyi, a senior special assistant to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), confirmed that the NJC has not publicly briefed on the matter.

Kemi Babalola, NJC's deputy director, stated she was unaware of the probe. This investigation follows a commitment made by Justice Keker Ekun in September 2025 to reform the judiciary and enhance public confidence.

The NJC had previously taken disciplinary actions against several judges, including compulsory retirements and suspensions, as part of its efforts to promote judicial excellence and transparency.
