Terrorists Abduct Traditional Ruler in Kwara State Attack

On August 22, 2026, gunmen believed to be terrorists kidnapped Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, the Kabiyesi Onigbesi of Igbesi land, in a late-night raid on the Igbesi community, located in the Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State. The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, confirmed the abduction on August 23, 2026, stating that the attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. on August 22.

The exact number of victims and the whereabouts of the abducted monarch remain unclear. Commissioner Adekimi refuted reports that other residents were taken alongside the monarch and assured that security operatives are actively working to locate and rescue him, describing the rescue efforts as being "in top gear." Igbesi is part of the Oke-Onigbin town in the Kwara South senatorial district and is notable as the birthplace of the late former Governor of Kwara State, Chief Cornelius Adebayo.
