76 Schools Closed in Borno Amid Ongoing Terror Threats

In Askira-Uba local government area of Borno State, 76 primary schools have been closed due to insecurity, with only 56 of the 113 schools remaining operational. This situation follows the abduction of about 80 students during attacks on schools in May and June.

Fasuma Askira, the local education secretary, stated that the insecurity prompted the closure of schools in vulnerable communities, particularly around Mussa and Lassa. The first attack occurred on 15 May when suspected insurgents abducted dozens of children in Mussa, with a register identifying 40 missing children.

The second attack took place on 29 June at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa. Following these incidents, education authorities advised the temporary closure of schools in affected areas and relocated junior secondary pupils from Mussa to a government boarding school in Uba.

Additionally, community vigilantes and soldiers have been deployed to enhance security around schools.
