Court Denies Nwaukoni's Passport Release in Terror Case

The Asaba Federal High Court rejected Chief Mike Nwaukoni's application to temporarily release his international passport to enable him to travel abroad for medical treatment. Nwaukoni is the fifth defendant in a terrorism case related to an alleged attack on the Ogwashi Uku Kingdom palace during the New Yam Festival two years ago.

The prosecution, led by CSP Samuel Mallum, argued that granting the application would jeopardize the administration of justice, as it could allow Nwaukoni to abscond. The court noted that Nwaukoni failed to provide genuine medical appointment evidence for his proposed travel between June and August 2026.

The prosecution also highlighted that the request seemed to be a tactic to delay proceedings. The court emphasized the importance of a speedy trial under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

The case is adjourned to June 4, 2026, for further proceedings.
