Maryam Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, a student from Gombe State, won the overall first position in the second category of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’an Recitation Competition held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Representing Nigeria, she competed in the category for memorisation of 60 Hizb of the Qur’an with Tafsir, achieving an impressive score of 97.70 marks.

Her victory, which came with a prize worth N120m, is significant as it marks the first participation of female contestants in the competition's 46-year history. Maryam is a student at the Abubakar Siddiq Community School for Qur’an Memorisation and is currently in her final year studying Physics Education at Gombe State University.

She has previously won the female category at the 40th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Maiduguri and the National Qur’an Recitation Competition of Nana Asma’u in February 2024. Her elder sister, Hajara Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, also achieved success in an international Qur’anic competition in 2024.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated Maryam on her achievement.
