Ireti Kingibe Demands Investigation into Sanitary Pad Safety

Ireti Kingibe, the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the National Assembly, has urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to investigate the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in disposable sanitary pads sold in Nigeria. Kingibe's appeal follows a video by Nigerian doctor Aniekwe Donald, who raised concerns about VOCs in sanitary pads after chemical analyses indicated their presence.

Aniekwe claimed that brands have attempted to silence complaints by sending PR packages to women. In her statement, Kingibe emphasized that the health and safety of women and girls should be a national priority and called for immediate action from regulatory authorities to conduct safety assessments, strengthen quality control, and provide transparent information.

She asserted that women deserve safe menstrual hygiene products and that public health concerns must be addressed promptly.
