UNGA 81 Faces Criticism Amid Global Crises in New York

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) is currently underway in New York, with the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” This annual gathering includes representatives from 193 member states. The UN, established in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, has faced criticism for its inability to effectively address ongoing wars, humanitarian crises, and widening inequalities.

Recent global developments, including geopolitical tensions and conflicts, have intensified calls for reforms within the organization. The UN Security Council holds primary responsibility for international peace, while the General Assembly serves as the chief deliberative and policymaking body.

In 2023, the assembly saw participation from 88 Heads of State, 42 Heads of Government, and over 650 ministers. Despite these efforts, the UN's responses to crises, such as the joint Israeli and US attacks on Iran, have largely been limited to condemnations and calls for restraint.
