UN's Khalilur Rahman Aims to Restore Global Trust

On September 9, 2023, Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh was inaugurated as the President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, succeeding Annalena Baerbock. Rahman pledged to reform the UN to better address global crises, adopting the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” He highlighted the necessity for the UN to adapt to contemporary challenges and reconnect with the populace it serves, stating, “We must make the United Nations fit for the future.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Rahman and acknowledged the challenges ahead, including armed conflicts, geopolitical divisions, and climate change.

Guterres stressed that rebuilding trust in the multilateral system is crucial, as current institutions struggle to meet global demands. He also expressed concern over violations of international law and human rights, which hinder international cooperation and erode public confidence.
