Guterres Warns of Global Threats at UN General Assembly

On September 9, António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, issued a stark warning regarding the escalating threats to global stability, including wars, climate change, inequality, and humanitarian crises. This statement was made during the opening of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where newly elected General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman commenced his tenure under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.” Guterres emphasized the urgent need for stronger international cooperation to address the world's most pressing issues, which he described as the defining challenge of our time.

He noted that existing international institutions, including the UN Security Council, are struggling to respond effectively to contemporary crises due to divisions among member states. Guterres highlighted the erosion of respect for international law and human rights, which further undermines the international system.

He called for enhanced diplomacy and cooperation to tackle these interconnected global challenges.
