Egbetokun Urges Legislative Support for Oil Sector Security

During a meeting in Abuja, Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, addressed the growing sophistication of threat actors in Nigeria's security landscape. The meeting included Hon.

Imo Ugochinyere, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream). Egbetokun highlighted the need for continuous improvement in security measures to protect the downstream petroleum sector against vandalism and theft, which pose significant threats to the economy.

He stressed that effective protection of this sector cannot be achieved without robust legislative backing, particularly in areas that fund efforts to confront these challenges. Egbetokun identified key areas for parliamentary intervention, including enhancing safety data systems to detect economic sabotage, improving surveillance and monitoring technology, and advancing training capacities to build special task units dedicated to protecting petroleum infrastructure.

He underscored the broader implications of infrastructure security for the nation's economy.
