INEC, Police to Crackdown on Political Intimidation Ahead of 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force have committed to taking action against politicians who issue threats against opponents as the 2027 general elections approach. This response follows public concerns regarding rising inflammatory rhetoric from political actors.

INEC stated that the Electoral Act allows it to act against political parties and candidates found culpable, while the police emphasized that incitement is a criminal offense. Prominent figures like Samson Itodo of Yiaga Africa and human rights lawyer Jiti Ogunye urged law enforcement to prosecute violators rather than merely issue warnings.

Notable statements include Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde's warning on April 25 against coercing opposition politicians to defect, referencing the violent history of "Operation Wetie." Buba Galadima, on May 2, controversially urged Nigerians to bring "bottles and jerry cans of kerosene" to polling units during elections. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke also warned against election rigging, recalling past political violence.
