Nigeria Calls for Global Governance Reform at BRICS Summit

On September 14, 2023, Nigeria called for a fundamental rethinking of global governance and the international financial system during the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the need to rewrite the rules of the world order to reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.

He advocated for a more representative and equitable global system, particularly highlighting the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions. Tinubu stated that BRICS should translate its growing influence into tangible development results, urging a shift from dialogue to implementation in partnerships covering trade, agriculture, food security, energy, and healthcare.

He also pitched Nigeria as a strategic investment destination, promoting its role as a gateway to the African market under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
