Tinubu Appoints Akpabio as APC Deputy Director General

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Senate President Godswill Akpabio as the Deputy Director General South I of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 elections. This appointment is part of the ruling party's strategy to secure a second term for Tinubu.

Akpabio, a former governor, is a significant political ally of Tinubu. The APC has established a 223-member Presidential Campaign Council to spearhead Tinubu's re-election campaign, focusing on political mobilization, stakeholder engagement, and campaign coordination across Nigeria.

Tinubu's re-election campaign faces challenges from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Obidient Movement, who argue that nearly 12 years of APC governance have resulted in economic hardship and insecurity. Cheta Nwanze from SBM Intelligence noted that Tinubu's economic reforms, including the devaluation of the naira, have led to a cost-of-living crisis, prompting widespread protests.

Additionally, Omole has been appointed as Deputy Director of Diaspora Mobilisation I for the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
