Candidates Seek Running Mates for 2027 Elections

As Nigeria approaches the January 2027 general elections, presidential candidates, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are intensifying their search for suitable running mates. This search is critical as candidates aim to build a winning ticket, with significant emphasis on religious balance and geopolitical strategy to maximize nationwide appeal.

The deadline for party primaries set by the Independent National Electoral Commission is May 30. Tinubu secured the APC nomination with 10,999,162 votes but faces criticism regarding the potential Muslim-Muslim ticket with current Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Atiku Abubakar won the ADC primaries with 1,855,787 votes, defeating Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Various candidates are being considered, including Rauf Aregbesola and Emeka Ihedioha, while the Labour Party's Chibuzor Okereke is also looking for a northern running mate.

Discussions continue within the People's Democratic Party regarding the role of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
