Tinubu Promises Power Sector Reforms for Nigerians

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, assured Nigerians that the ongoing reforms in the power sector would create a transparent and responsive electricity system. This assurance was made during the launch of a training program for 5,000 young Nigerians in smart meter installation under the Presidential Metering Initiative at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) in Abuja.

Tinubu highlighted that the transformation of the electricity sector requires consistency, partnership, and technical excellence. He stated that the initiative not only aims to strengthen the electricity sector but also to create employment opportunities for youths while equipping them with essential technical skills.

The program is expected to expand to accommodate up to 500,000 participants. Tinubu emphasized the critical role of smart metering in replacing estimated billing with accurate measurements, thereby empowering consumers and improving service delivery.

Olu Verhiejen, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Metering Initiative, noted that the government plans to deploy over seven million smart meters.
