Tinubu Launches Youth Metering Program for Electricity Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, launched a training program for 5,000 young Nigerians in smart meter installation at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) in Abuja. This initiative is part of the Presidential Metering Initiative, which aims to strengthen the electricity sector while providing employment opportunities and equipping youth with technical skills.

The program is expected to expand to accommodate up to 500,000 participants. The initiative will help ensure that households and businesses receive professionally installed smart meters, replacing estimated billing with accurate measurement.

Olu Verhiejen, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Metering Initiative, stated that the federal government plans to deploy over seven million smart meters, marking the largest metering program in Nigeria's history. The program will also provide graduates with professional training and a pathway to employment with electricity distribution companies and meter providers.
