Tinubu Orders EFCC to Unfreeze Osun State Accounts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court to vacate an order that froze the accounts of the Osun State Government. This directive was issued on August 6, 2026, following the EFCC's court order obtained on August 5, 2026.

Tinubu expressed embarrassment over the timing of the EFCC's action, which he believes could undermine public confidence in the upcoming governorship election in Osun State. He acknowledged the EFCC's statutory mandate but stressed that federal institutions should not be perceived as interfering with elections.

The President reiterated his commitment to allowing anti-corruption agencies to operate independently and without political interference. He emphasized that the integrity and credibility of Nigeria's democratic process must be preserved, thus necessitating his intervention to ensure that no federal agency is seen as influencing the electoral process.
