Tinubu Orders Reconstruction of Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu directed the redesign and total reconstruction of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and other major federal highways in Edo State due to public outcry over the road's condition, which has left travelers stranded. Minister of Works David Umahi inspected the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road, while Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo visited roads in Ekiti State facing similar issues.

Umahi took responsibility for the road's condition, condemning the Benin-Asaba Expressway Concessions Company (BAECC) for its poor management and manipulation of the contract process. He stated that palliative measures would not suffice and criticized BAECC for destroying public property by removing asphalt.

The expressway was concessioned to BAECC in 2025 for expansion from four to ten lanes, with a completion promise made in October last year. Umahi expressed disappointment and emphasized the need for competent contractors to restore the road, indicating that the government would intervene to address the ongoing issues.
