Benin-Warri Highway Crisis: Umahi's Infrastructure Failure

The Benin-Warri Highway has deteriorated significantly, causing severe delays for passengers, including pregnant women and families, who have been trapped for hours or days due to mud, potholes, and stranded trucks. This situation underscores a broader infrastructure crisis affecting major highways in the South-South region, including the Benin-Asaba and Benin-Auchi roads.

Minister of Works David Umahi, who has been in office for over three years under President Bola Tinubu's administration, is criticized for his handling of the situation, raising questions about the adequacy of his response to inherited infrastructure challenges. The condition of the highways has led to missed medical appointments, food shortages, and psychological distress among travelers.

In July, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved emergency repairs on a particularly problematic section of the highway, prompting concerns about why a federal highway had deteriorated to the point of requiring state intervention.
