Tinubu to Send Off Team Nigeria for Commonwealth Games

President Bola Tinubu will perform an official send-off for Team Nigeria in Abuja today, as the Nigerian contingent prepares to depart for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The event will take place at the Presidential Villa and aims to show support for the athletes as they enter the final phase of their preparations.

Nigeria seeks to build on its impressive performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where it emerged as the highest-ranked African nation on the medal table, amassing a total of 35 medals, including 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze. The Nigerian athletes are currently training intensively in Abuja and will undergo a three-week training camp before heading to Glasgow.

Nigeria will compete in 10 sports with a total of 74 athletes. The National Sports Commission (NSC) recently appointed Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the nation's shot put star and 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, as the male captain of the team, alongside two-time Olympic champion Folashad Oluwafemiayo, who will serve as the female captain.
