Tinubu to Send-off Team Nigeria for Commonwealth Games

President Bola Tinubu will perform an official send-off for Team Nigeria today in Abuja as they prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The Nigerian contingent, consisting of 74 athletes, is set to compete in 10 sports.

The event will take place at the Presidential Villa, showcasing support for the team as they enter the final phase of preparation. Nigeria aims to build on its impressive performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where it emerged as the highest-ranked African nation on the medal table, securing a total of 35 medals, including 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze.

The athletes are currently undergoing an intensive three-week training camp in Abuja before heading to Glasgow. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the nation's shot put star and 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, has been named the male captain, while two-time Olympic champion Folashad Oluwafemiayo will serve as the female captain.
