ADC Claims Tinubu's $1bn Fund Is Election-Driven Reaction

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has characterized the Nigerian government's proposed $1 billion social protection program as a response to Atiku Abubakar's targeted production subsidy proposal aimed at alleviating the cost of living. In a statement issued by the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of exacerbating economic difficulties through ineffective policies.

The ADC expressed skepticism regarding the timing and funding of the program, particularly questioning the involvement of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. The party noted that Nigerians have faced rising costs for three years while the government claimed it lacked resources for relief.

The ADC argued that the government's sudden availability of $1 billion for social support, just ahead of the 2027 elections, raises concerns about its sincerity. Furthermore, the ADC demanded accountability for previous social intervention programs and expressed apprehension that the proposed N40,000 "shock-response payment" could be perceived as vote buying if not transparently managed.
