Tinubu Halts EFCC's Account Freezing in Osun Election

President Bola Tinubu took decisive action to prevent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government just days before the August 15 governorship election. This move came after Governor Ademola Adeleke raised concerns about political pressure aimed at undermining his administration.

The EFCC, led by Chairman Ola Olukoyede, had issued a 'Post no debit' letter to First Bank, where the state's accounts are held, as part of an investigation into the alleged fraudulent handling of approximately N11 billion in various funds. Osun State's Attorney General, Oluwole Jimi-Bada (SAN), and Commissioner for Finance, Sola Ogungbile, reported police actions at the bank to arrest staff members.

In response, President Tinubu directed the EFCC to return to court to vacate the freezing order, emphasizing that such actions could set a dangerous precedent for democracy in Nigeria. Political analysts noted that if the EFCC had succeeded, it could have led to similar actions against opposition parties in future elections.
