Two Fishermen Missing After Boat Capsizes in Bayelsa

Two fishermen, Elder Sunday Sample Timothy and his assistant Mr Avarada, went missing after their boat capsized in Bayelsa. The incident occurred early on a Friday when the outboard engine of their boat malfunctioned while they were at sea.

A rescue boat attempted to tow the disabled vessel when it capsized, throwing both fishermen into the water. Those aboard the rescue boat reached the shore safely, but Timothy and Avarada have not been found.

Community members have initiated a search operation along the coastline and nearby waterways, recovering the fishermen's gear but not locating the men. Chief Saturday Akimi-Omunhuo, a community leader, described the situation as tragic and noted that similar accidents have happened in the past.

He urged the Brass Local Government Council, the Bayelsa State Government, the Federal Government, and other stakeholders to provide better safety equipment and weather monitoring systems to protect fishing communities reliant on the sea for their livelihoods.
