UBEC Launches Alternative High School for Girls in Lagos

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) launched an Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos State, to facilitate the re-enrollment of female school dropouts. At the commissioning, UBEC Executive Secretary Dr Aisha Garba emphasized that factors such as poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and family responsibilities should not permanently hinder girls' access to education.

The initiative is designed to restore hope and provide vulnerable girls and young women with a second chance to complete their education. The school will offer a combination of academic instruction and vocational education, equipping beneficiaries with essential skills for economic independence.

The rehabilitation of the facility included renovated classrooms, ICT facilities, laboratory equipment, vocational training tools, and improved sanitation. Dr Garba urged the Lagos State Government to ensure the facility remains accessible and announced plans for another Alternative High School for Girls in Ikorodu, which is nearing completion.

UBEC plans to further equip the Agboju school with a bus and digital smart boards by the end of 2026.
