UBEC Launches Rehabilitated School for Dropout Girls

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has launched a renewed initiative to reintegrate girls who have dropped out of school, particularly teenage mothers and those impacted by poverty. This was announced by UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Aisha Garba, during the inauguration of the rehabilitated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Dr Garba emphasized that the school serves as a “second-chance” opportunity for girls whose education was interrupted by early pregnancy and financial difficulties. The institution will enable students to complete their secondary education while acquiring vocational skills for future careers.

Nana Shettima, representing the First Lady and wife of Vice-President Kassim Shettima, highlighted the importance of educating girls for national development. Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, speaking for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the inauguration as a new beginning for the beneficiaries.

The rehabilitated school features over 26 classrooms, laboratories, vocational workshops, a library, and an ICT center. UBEC is also working on another Alternative High School for Girls in Ikorodu to further expand educational access.
