Lagos Increases BRT and BRI Fares by 13% Effective March 2026

The Lagos State government has announced a 13% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) services, effective from March 2, 2026. This decision was communicated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) via its official X account.

The fare adjustment is designed to support public transport operations in light of rising inflationary pressures and operational costs. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the fare hike following appeals from public transport operators who highlighted economic challenges affecting transit services.

The fare increase follows an annual review mechanism and is intended to address the rising costs of maintenance, spare parts, staff salaries, and investments in cleaner, more efficient buses. Historically, fare adjustments have been implemented regularly, with a temporary 25% fare reduction reinstated in February 2024 to help residents cope with economic pressures.

The latest fare review is part of ongoing reforms in the transport sector, including the Lekki-Epe corridor.
