Uber Launches Robotaxis in London After Nigeria Exit

Uber launched its autonomous ride-hailing services in London on Thursday, just one day after ceasing operations in Nigeria. This expansion is part of Uber's strategy to enhance its global autonomous mobility ambitions, supported by British self-driving technology firm Wayve, which provides the AI Driver for the vehicles.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility, stated that this launch aims to build confidence among consumers and government entities. The initial fleet consists of fewer than 20 Wayve-powered Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles, each monitored by a licensed human operator until full driverless operations can commence, pending regulatory approvals.

Riders can request an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric in designated areas and may be matched with an autonomous vehicle at no extra cost. Uber and Wayve's partnership began in 2024, with plans to deploy Wayve-powered vehicles in multiple markets.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO, confirmed ongoing investments in ride-hailing and autonomous mobility, including future plans for self-driving rides in Tokyo.
