Uber Limits Remote Work to 1% Amid Major Restructuring

Uber announced a major restructuring plan that will limit fully remote work to 1% of its workforce, as stated by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in a memo. This decision follows the company's plan to eliminate approximately 3,300 jobs, marking its largest workforce reduction since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Khosrowshahi indicated that most remote employees would be required to return to the office, with a hybrid policy mandating three days a week in-office work. The restructuring aims to simplify Uber's organization by reducing management layers and cutting the number of small teams with limited direct reports.

The company plans to concentrate global teams in major hubs like New York and San Francisco while establishing regional and local hubs. The layoffs are expected to reduce management ranks by about 20% and halve the number of micro-teams.

Additionally, Uber ended its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria in September after 12 years, citing changes in the local operating environment and competition.
