UEFA Seeks Candidate to Challenge Infantino in FIFA Vote

UEFA is advancing efforts to identify a unity candidate to oppose Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2024. Despite previously threatening to boycott FIFA competitions, UEFA has decided to withdraw this threat, which will be formally confirmed at an executive committee meeting in Monaco.

This decision allows the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland to proceed with participation from six European teams: England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and hosts Poland. UEFA believes a candidate must secure the support of 106 of FIFA's 211 member associations to win the election.

Although no challenger has been officially named, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is considered a serious potential candidate. Nominations for the FIFA presidency must be submitted by November 18.

UEFA has also abandoned plans for a vote of no confidence against Infantino, as it would require 159 votes. FIFA has welcomed UEFA's decision to end the boycott, emphasizing the importance of unity in football.
