UK Sets Minimum Age for Student Visa Applications

The UK government has announced that foreign nationals must be at least 16 years old to qualify for a student visa to study in the United Kingdom. Official guidance states that the Student visa is available to applicants aged 16 and above who intend to study at a recognized educational institution in the UK.

For applicants aged 16 to 17, there is an alternative route: they may apply for a child student visa if they wish to study at an independent school, depending on their circumstances. It is important for younger applicants and their families to understand the distinction between the Student visa and the child student visa, as choosing the incorrect category could impact the application outcome.

The Student visa has fully replaced the previous Tier 4 (General) student visa, which was used by international students. Prospective students are advised to confirm which visa route applies to their situation before applying.
