Women's Role in Peace Processes Emphasized in Nigeria

At a conference in Northwest Nigeria, Mr. Gill Lever, the UK Deputy High Commissioner, stated that communities become safer and more resilient when women are included in peace processes.

This event, organized by Global Rights in collaboration with UK Aid and the Kukah Centre, focused on empowering women in peacebuilding and justice access. Lever noted the significance of establishing gender-balanced community dialogue committees, aiming for 40% female participation.

He referenced historical leadership structures in Sokoto State and the need for initiatives to prevent gender-based violence. Ms.

Kemi Okenyodo, Executive Director of the Rule of Law Empowerment Initiative, highlighted the ongoing commitment to inclusive peace and justice access despite challenges like insecurity and inter-community tensions. The conference also featured Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, who underscored women's vital role in advancing peace and justice.

Mr. Olubunmi Aweda provided an overview of the project’s progress in enhancing community resilience and access to justice across Kano, Sokoto, and Kaduna states.
