UK Government Funds 100 New Training Places for Barristers

The United Kingdom Government has launched a scheme providing £1.5m in annual funding to create up to 100 additional training places for aspiring criminal barristers. Announced on Tuesday, the initiative aims to make the profession more accessible to talented individuals from diverse backgrounds and to strengthen the pipeline of junior advocates.

Minister for Courts and Legal Services Sarah Sackman KC MP emphasized the importance of ensuring opportunities for all, recalling her own experience entering the profession. The funding will support pupillages that would not otherwise be available, offering practical training, education, supervision, and mentoring necessary to qualify as criminal barristers.

The scheme builds on the existing pupillage match-funding programme by the Council of the Inns of Court and is expected to address pressures in the criminal justice system. The Criminal Bar Association welcomed the initiative, highlighting its role in maintaining a diverse and independent Criminal Bar.

The legal sector contributes over £42bn to the UK economy annually, and this investment aims to bolster its talent base.
