UK Citizenship Ceremony Requirement for Foreign Applicants

The UK government mandates that every foreigner aged 18 or above who has successfully applied for British citizenship must attend a citizenship ceremony within three months of receiving their official invitation. This ceremony is organized by the applicant's local authority and typically occurs in a group setting, although private ceremonies can be requested for an additional fee.

During the ceremony, attendees must make an oath of allegiance to the Crown or an affirmation, pledging to respect the rights, freedoms, and laws of the United Kingdom. At the end of the ceremony, successful applicants receive a certificate of British citizenship and a welcome pack.

Applicants may bring up to two guests, and some local authorities offer photographs or videos for purchase. If applicants are outside the UK at the time of their invitation, they can request to hold the ceremony at a British embassy or consulate, but the three-month deadline still applies.

Exceptions to this requirement exist for certain categories of citizenship, including British overseas territories citizens and those under the Windrush scheme.
