UN Peacekeepers Attacked Amid Escalating Lebanon Conflict

On a recent Sunday, UN peacekeepers in Lebanon were fired upon three times by non-state armed groups in the southern region of the country. This incident coincided with escalating conflict, as Israeli airstrikes targeted various locations in Lebanon, resulting in significant casualties.

The death toll from these strikes has risen to 850, with approximately 830,000 people displaced, including 130,000 seeking shelter. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has proposed direct negotiations with Israel, but Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded negatively when asked about the possibility of talks.

Instead, Saar emphasized the cancellation of a U.S.-brokered maritime border deal from 2022. French President Emmanuel Macron has offered to host negotiations, but no agenda or location has been set.

The situation remains dire, with ongoing strikes affecting southern Beirut and surrounding areas, as Hezbollah continues to respond to Israeli military actions.
