Tinubu's UNGA Visit: No Arrest Risks, Says Envoy

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, addressed concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu's potential arrest during his upcoming participation in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Ibrahim dismissed claims that Tinubu could face legal action related to his past in the United States, stating that the Nigerian Mission to the UN had not received any communication from the US government indicating any restrictions on Tinubu.

He emphasized that protections for representatives of UN member states are outlined in Section 11 of the 1947 UN-US Headquarters Agreement, which safeguards them and their families from impediments while traveling to and from the UN headquarters. Ibrahim asserted that social media cannot criminalize or arrest Tinubu, reinforcing that he enjoys immunity from arrest in the US during the UNGA.
