UNIDO Recognizes Ogun State for Green Economy Initiatives

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has designated Ogun State as one of Nigeria's core states to facilitate the country's transition to a circular economy, recognizing its environmental sustainability initiatives and climate change programs. This recognition places Ogun among the states implementing Project 220145 Component 2, aimed at advancing Nigeria's green transition to net-zero emissions.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a UNIDO workshop on the State-Level Implementation Plan and Guidelines for Data Collection and Management under the Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment Waste Management Project in Abeokuta. Ogun State's Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, described the recognition as an endorsement of the state's environmental policies, citing various initiatives such as distributing biomass smokeless stoves to over 3,000 residents and deploying electric motorcycles and compressed natural gas buses.

Emem Umana, the National Field Coordinator of the UNIDO Nigeria Office, commended Ogun State's commitment to circular economy initiatives and urged the government to sustain its environmental reforms.
