Ogun State Earns UNIDO Recognition for Sustainability Efforts

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has recognized Ogun State for its contributions to Nigeria's transition towards a circular economy and low-carbon future. Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, announced this recognition during a UNIDO workshop in Abeokuta, focusing on the State-Level Implementation Plan and Guidelines for Data Collection and Management under the Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment (OGREE) Waste Management Project.

This acknowledgment positions Ogun among key participants in UNIDO Project 220145, which aims to facilitate Nigeria's Green and Just Transition to Net Zero. Oresanya highlighted the state's commitment to resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable economic growth.

Ogun has partnered with the Federal Government to distribute over 3,000 biomass smokeless stoves to reduce carbon emissions. The state is also pioneering the use of electric motorcycles and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.

Other initiatives include the Blue Box Initiative for waste segregation and various recycling schemes. UNIDO's Nigeria National Field Coordinator, Ms Emem Umana, praised Ogun's commitment to sustainability and encouraged continued efforts.
