Unified Tax System Proposed to Boost Abuja's Revenue

A forum has unveiled plans for a unified tax system in Abuja, aimed at significantly raising the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and curbing revenue leakages. The initiative, involving the Nigeria Revenue Service and the FCT Internal Revenue Service, outlines a coordinated roadmap to eliminate tax duplication and improve compliance.

The proposed system will integrate a digital platform for real-time tracking of payments and enhance audit transparency. The authors believe that a unified database will broaden the tax net by capturing businesses and individuals previously operating outside the formal system.

This plan is designed to boost the fiscal capacity of the Federal Capital Territory without necessarily introducing new taxes. Officials argue that harmonizing the tax system will lower the cost of doing business and remove multiple charges and illegal roadblocks that discourage enterprise growth.
