UNILAG Professor Advocates for Impact-Driven Research

Professor Moham Amuda Mondai, Director of the Institute of Information Communication Technology at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has called for a fundamental shift in doctoral research across Africa to prioritize community-driven, impact-oriented studies. Speaking at the AFRETEC UNILAG Doctoral Academy, he emphasized the importance of producing research that transcends academia to create tangible products, services, and policy solutions that address Africa's developmental challenges.

He noted that African universities produce a small fraction of doctoral graduates whose research translates into viable commercial solutions. Mondai argued that doctoral research should be rooted in community realities and involve beneficiaries in identifying problems and developing solutions.

He stressed the need for ethical responsibility in research, particularly with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. The program aims to enhance mentorship and improve the quality of research, with plans to expand participation across Nigeria and other African countries.
