UNILAG Withdraws Controversial Anti-Rape Advisory

The University of Lagos, located in Akoka, has retracted a controversial sexual harassment advisory aimed at female students following significant public criticism. The advisory, produced by the university's Student Affairs Division, included suggestions such as “Do not shake hands anyhow with any man” and “Do not dress to kill,” which many perceived as promoting victim-blaming.

In a statement released on Monday by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the Head of the Communication Unit, the university clarified that the advisory did not reflect its values and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment. The university emphasized that placing responsibility on victims is unacceptable and contrary to its core values.

It described sexual harassment as serious misconduct that can affect anyone and encouraged students to utilize official reporting structures for any incidents. The university remains committed to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all its members.
