Universal Insurance NAICOM Lawsuit Update: Court Adjourns to Sept 16

Universal Insurance Plc has disclosed that its lawsuit against NAICOM and an appointed Receiver could not proceed on 3 September 2026 due to the late filing of processes by the Respondents. The Federal High Court in Lagos adjourned the matter to 16 September 2026 and extended an existing restraining order against the Respondents pending the hearing.

Universal Insurance Plc (UNIVINSURE) announced on 4 September 2026 that its ongoing suit against the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and an appointed Receiver appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on 3 September 2026 but could not be heard as scheduled.

According to the filing, the adjournment was caused by the late filing of processes by the Respondents. The court has rescheduled the hearing of the main suit to 16 September 2026.

A notable development from the proceedings is that the court extended its previously granted restraining order against the Respondents, which remains in force pending the hearing of the suit.

The company's Board stated that Universal Insurance Plc remains committed to pursuing all available legal and regulatory avenues to protect the interests of its shareholders, policyholders, employees, and other stakeholders. The Company Secretary, Chinedu Onyilimba, Esq., signed the announcement on behalf of the Board, and the company pledged to continue informing the investing public of material developments as they arise.
