Building Collapse in Ilorin Claims Four Lives, Four Rescued

On Tuesday morning, a two-storey building collapsed in the Popo-Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, resulting in four confirmed deaths and four rescues. The Kwara State Fire Service reported that eight individuals were trapped after eight rooms of the approximately 26-room structure collapsed at around 5:08 a.m.

The deceased were identified as Muhammed Bolakale (55), Fasilat (53), Mistura (28), and Barakat (26), while four others, including Zainab (23), Hajia (15), Muqtar (7), and Fridaos (10), were rescued alive. The Fire Service commenced search-and-rescue operations immediately upon arrival, facing challenging conditions.

The operation was supported by various agencies, including the Federal Fire Service, NSCDC Disaster Management Department, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Two excavators were deployed to assist in debris removal.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, stated that the building was assessed as unsafe and urged residents to report structural weaknesses.
