U.S. Cuts Citizenship Renunciation Fee to $450

The United States government announced a significant reduction in the fee required for individuals wishing to formally renounce their U.S. citizenship. The fee will drop from $2,350 to $450, effective April 13.

This decision reverses a price increase that was implemented in 2015 and returns the fee to its original level established in 2010. The fee reduction follows a policy review that took into account reports regarding the tax-related challenges faced by U.S. citizens living abroad.

Advocacy groups, including an American non-profit organization representing individuals who unintentionally acquired U.S. citizenship, welcomed this decision. They described the fee reduction as a result of years of advocacy and legal efforts aimed at reducing the burden on individuals struggling with the complexities of the U.S. tax system.

Unlike many countries, the U.S. taxes its citizens based on nationality rather than residency, which complicates financial affairs for Americans living overseas.
