US Initiates Drone Warfare Training for Nigerian Forces

On August 25, 2023, the United States commenced specialized military training for Nigerian troops in Bauchi State, focusing on drone operations, combat casualty care, and explosive ordnance disposal. This initiative is part of a broader security partnership between Washington and Abuja, aimed at improving the capability and readiness of Nigerian forces facing ongoing security challenges.

The training, conducted by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), included topics such as Combat Lifesaver, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, weapons familiarization, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Capt. Gabriel Feingold, a logistics officer with the US Army Southern European Task Force, noted that Nigerian military leadership selected training areas deemed most beneficial.

Sgt. Mark Murphy led UAS training for about 10 personnel from the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment, which included classroom instruction and hands-on operation of unmanned aircraft. The emphasis on UAS reflects the increasing importance of technology in military operations, particularly for surveillance and intelligence gathering.
