Vietnamese Cargo Ship Sinks in South China Sea, 17 Missing

On Sunday, Vietnamese authorities reported that 17 individuals are missing after the cargo ship Khoi Nguyen 18 sank in the South China Sea, also referred to as the East Sea in Vietnam. The vessel, carrying 62 people, encountered severe weather conditions near Yongshu Reef, known as Fiery Cross Reef, which is claimed by both Vietnam and China.

Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Vietnamese foreign ministry, confirmed that 45 people had been rescued by Vietnamese rescuers with assistance from Chinese rescue forces, including ships and helicopters. The search for the remaining missing individuals is ongoing.

The Khoi Nguyen 18 is a Vietnamese-registered cargo ship measuring just under 70 meters in length. In a related incident, another Vietnamese vessel sank on Friday in the same area, resulting in 33 fishermen being rescued and three reported missing.

The South China Sea is a strategically significant region with competing territorial claims from several nations.
