Visually Impaired Nigerians Advocate for Mobility Support in Local Communities

Visually impaired individuals in Nigeria are pushing for the deployment of mobility orientation officers in all 774 local government areas to ensure proper training in using white canes for safe mobility. With an estimated 1.3 million blind and 24 million visually impaired people in Nigeria, the need for basic eye care services and mobility support is crucial.

The call for government intervention was made during an event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, where initiatives like financial services for the visually impaired were also launched by organizations like First Bank Nigeria. The move aims to empower the visually impaired community for better inclusion and independence.
