Wang Yi Advocates for US-Iran Dialogue in Beijing Talks

On September 16, 2026, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing. Wang encouraged both Iran and the United States to exercise restraint and return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) promptly.

He emphasized China's willingness to play a constructive role in resolving international disputes as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Wang highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation between China and Iran, reaffirming their status as comprehensive strategic partners.

He stated that the prolonged US-Iran conflict is detrimental to both parties and the international community. Wang called for the reconstruction of negotiation mechanisms based on existing consensus and urged all parties to take effective measures to ensure the safety of international shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

He also pointed out the inadequacy of the current security architecture in the Middle East and reiterated China's commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
