Iraq Requests FIFA to Postpone World Cup Playoff Match

Graham Arnold, the head coach of the Iraqi national football team, has made a formal request to FIFA to postpone the upcoming World Cup playoff match set for March 31 in Monterrey. Arnold cited ongoing regional tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have made travel extremely challenging for the Iraqi team.

In late February, Iraq closed its airspace, complicating travel logistics for players and staff to join the national squad. Arnold emphasized the importance of having the best team available for what he described as the country's biggest game in 40 years, noting the passion of the Iraqi people for football and the significance of qualifying for the World Cup after a long absence.

He pointed out that relying solely on players based abroad would make it difficult to field a competitive team. Alongside Arnold, the Iraqi Football Federation is appealing to FIFA for a delay to ensure adequate preparation and field the strongest lineup possible.
