FG Promises Justice for NSCDC Custody Deaths of Miners

The federal government of Nigeria has committed to holding accountable anyone found responsible for the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed condolences to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the affected families during a statement on Friday.

He assured that the government prioritizes the lives of its citizens and will conduct a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Immediate actions have been taken, including the suspension of NSCDC Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Idris highlighted the importance of conducting enforcement operations lawfully and with respect for human dignity. He urged calm in Wushishi and across Niger State, requesting that the investigation proceed without interference.

The NSCDC initially cited a suspected disease outbreak as the cause of death, but further medical confirmation is required.
